Cingular now bigger than Verizon?
What cell-phone merger means to you - Feb. 18, 2004
Well, even if the corporate side of the merger goes through by the end of the year, they're sure it have fun actually combining networks and services. It took Verizon Wireless years and even now the networks are diverse. It's much like roaming between company divisions.
Of course, with GSM this could be easy. They could get a roaming agreement going within months, even before the full merger. Then it will be interesting to see if Cingular will still let T-Mobile roam onto them. In my market here, T-Mobile would have no coverage if it couldn't roam on to Cingular. That would be bad.
Then there's the whole handset issue that the article talks about:
'At the very least, said Tamer, the combined company should have a lot of leverage in negotiating with cell phone manufacturers. "That means better prices on really cool phones," he said.'
This is the whole problem with Verizon, now. If Cingular starts bullying handset companies around, cool phones will really slow down in the US. And we all want cool phones, dammit! ;)
