Of 1megapixel camera phone quality...

Reiter's Camera Phone Report: Vodafone introduces first one megapixel handset in the U.K.

So, before I had a chance to play with megapixel camera phones, I would have totally agreed with his "The start of a tipping point in Europe". In fact, I've probably said as much to people around work.

Unfortunately, I've had a chance to play with a couple of models so far and the following statement applies:

First there were camera phones with really small crappy images. Then there were camera phones with crappy VGA images. Now we have camera phones with over a million pixels of absolute CRAP!

Given that the Mars rovers can make excellent photos with a single megapixel camera, it's clearly the choice of parts on the handset OEMs. They have got to be using super cheap sensors. In addition, even saying these things have optics is like saying a Geo Metro has an engine. It may function, but it certainly is right at home at the bottom of the pack.

*sigh* One day we'll have camera phones that can take pictures as good as my old Casio QV10a with 320x240 could take. For an example of what I'm talking about, visit my phlog. It's resized, unfortunately, because the quality has actually increased... maybe if I have time I'll post a snippet of the image to show the crappiness in it's full glory! ;)
