« Bionic Woman Apple iPhone Blooper | Main | Still Here »

The Big Switch

So, as some may know, I've had an Apple iPhone for quite a while.  I got it on one of the prepay plans because I wasn't sure if the coverage would be good enough for my needs and I didn't want to be stuck with two years at $70 per month. In addition, I've still be carrying my Verizon LG VX9800 ("The V") and the Sprint LG Musiq.

Well, two days ago (from the start of this writing) I ported my Verizon number over to the iPhone.  Nothing is as simple as it sounds, though.

Early last week, I contacted customer support via online chat.  I asked them if I could port an external number to my existing account and replace the number on the existing account.  Of course, they told me I could do that, it wouldn't be a problem, but that I'd have to call to get it done.

So, I called a couple of days ago.  The person I talked to told me that I could not port my number over and replace the existing number.  That was impossible, according to them, and the customer support that told me I could didn't tell me correctly and probably was trained properly.  So, I asked what I could do and was told more stuff that I couldn't do.  I couldn't move the credit I had.  And then, when she found out I had an iPhone, I was told I couldn't even activate it with a new number! I thanked her for the lack of help and went away a bit upset.

I then proceeded to get back on the live support chat.  There, I wasn't told yes or no but I was given another number to call.  So I called it.  It asked for my number and then told me they couldn't find any record of porting.  Which was true, of course.  So I entered some invalid numbers until I got to a real person.  The first thing I asked them was if I could do what I wanted.  They said they would need to get both numbers first, so I gave them my numbers. Sure enough, she said she could port it and that it might not be all done until morning.

Turns out, it was a little faster than that.  Immediately, I could make outgoing calls.  Within about 2-3 hours, incoming calls were being directed to the iPhone, and by the end of the next day, incoming text messages came to the iPhone.

UPDATE: Now, many days later, I'm having only one issue:  EDGE has become flaky.  It only works with the widgets and only some of the time.  It doesn't seem to be working with the browser at all. I think I need to do a full restore, but I'm trying to stay with 1.1.1, so who knows. I'm all prepped for 1.1.2, though. I just don't even know if that will help or if it's some account setting that has changed (although I don't see why the widgets would sometimes work if that was the case).  I tried contacting AT&T support online, but they said iPhone support was restricted and I had to call in.  Seems strange, actually, since calling in would cost AT&T more money -- unless it redirects to some Apple-paid-for support folks or something.
