Useful Chrome Trick
I often have a lot of browser tabs open. A vast majority of these tabs are usually pages I have queued up to read. Most of these pages also have Flash on them. Either they have ads that I’m not seeing, video that I am not ready to play, or various other things that just aren’t useful when I’m directly looking at the page. This tends to waste processor cycles and can sometimes cause the machine to really slow down, both from processor usage and memory usage.
Well, Chrome puts Flash in a single process separate from the pages, but all pages use this single process. This means it is very quick and easy to kill of Flash. Simply go in to the Chrome task manager, choose the Flash plug-in, and hit end process on it. What if you needed to view Flash on just one page? Simply refresh that page and it’ll reload, but only the particular Flash objects on that page, still saving memory, processor, and perhaps even network resources.
Sometimes I see the Flash plug-in grinding away when I can’t find any tabs with Flash running. A simple button press is all it takes to eliminate it without restarting the browser or randomly closing tabs. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not blaming Flash for this. I’m just praising a useful Chrome feature for killing off Flash when it’s not needed with minimal impact to other parts of the system and browsing experience.
Warning: Don’t do this if you have something you’re editing or doing in Flash and you also don’t want to lose this. It really will kill every Flash object on every Chrome tab, including application tabs.
