Do You Still Use a Desktop Mail Client?

The question should really be: Do you still use a desktop mail client for mail that isn’t work email? I don’t. I haven’t in quite some time. I use Gmail for all of my personal mail. I use other POP and IMAP servers for domain mail (including some with Google Apps). However, I use my primary Gmail email account as an email client to check the email on all of them. That means, I can send and receive all of my email through the single Gmail interface. Really, it’s my one email client. It has all the filters I could ever need. It has the ability to forward email based on filters, respond to email, etc. This isn’t anything Outlook can’t do. Except, Outlook can’t do that if Outlook isn’t running. This can.

However, even if you don’t use Gmail, you might not be using desktop email. Most email accounts, and MS Exchange accounts, have web access. Why bother using a desktop email client when you can get to your mail from any machine via web access? And use it just as quickly, if not faster, because of modern Ajax interfaces. So, again, why bother with a desktop client?
